The Southern Counties Pétanque Association is one of a dozen or so geographic divisions of the English Pétanque Association (EPA), devoted to promoting the sport of Pétanque. Commonly known as French Boules, the game has an enthusiastic following in the UK where it is truly a family sport, appealing to young and old and to both men and women equally.
What a marvellous weekend at the Inter-Regionals that turned out to be!
A double-first in the Championship and Challenge and a more than creditable fifth for our juniors, not to mention incredible late-night shooting prowess shown by Jamie, Marc and Oscar.
Many thanks go to our managers, Hilary Kidd, Bernie Miles, Sue Sandy and Hannah Lombard, all of whom refused to allow a little light drizzle and reams of soggy paper to deter them from their appointed tasks.
Huge thanks also to our promotions man extraordinaire Glenn Floyd for providing not only bells, whistles and flags but also motivational meetings to keep the squad on its toes!
However, the hugest thanks of all must be reserved for our squad of players who played their socks off to a consistently high standard throughout both days to wrest the biggest prizes and put the likes of Kent and Chiltern firmly in their rightful places!
Mighty congratulations to the entire SCPA squad, playing and non-playing, for an outstanding achievement which has made me very proud to be your President.
Naturally, as the only direction from here is downwards, this means that your next little task will be to maintain this exalted position for as long as possible. But, you can do it, The South has risen again!
Congratulations to all concerned, it made the backache caused by setting up on Friday more than worth it!
