At the last Limesdowne Open, a cheque for £2,356 was presented to Macmillan Cancer Support which had been raised by the Limesdowne charity weekend. The Macmillan Mêlée was started many years ago by the late Jack Weedon and 96 people played in the first year. This year, as well as the pétanque mêlée, Limesdowne’s President, Tony Hewitt, organised a jazz evening, auction and a sponsored walk, so the fund raising was spread over several days. A new club and affiliate to the SCPA is Cranleigh, between Guildford and Horsham. They hosted a very successful Open Triples competition on 31st August. We look forward to welcoming their members into our regional events.

Mike Hordern, President of The Lamb Inn Pétanque Club, celebrated his 90th birthday on September 15th 2009, and the next day he played a league match against Limesdowne PC. Is he the oldest regular league player we wonder? Mike, and his late wife Liz, joined The Lamb PC in 1993, where he was club treasurer for a number of years. He was presented with a case of fine wines from the club, and of course, the obligatory helium balloon! Mike intends to continue playing home league games, where he is an asset both with his pointing and shooting.

The Southern Counties Pétanque Association is one of a dozen or so geographic divisions of the English Pétanque Association (EPA), devoted to promoting the sport of Pétanque. Commonly known as French Boules, the game has an enthusiastic following in the UK where it is truly a family sport, appealing to young and old and to both men and women equally.
I am very pleased to extend to you a very warm welcome to the website of the Southern Counties Pétanque Association.
The SCPA is one of fifteen regions that are affiliated to the English Pétanque Association. Our Association has well over 400 members and well over 20 Clubs to be found across Hampshire, West Sussex, Dorset as well as parts of Surrey and Wiltshire.
The joy of our sport is that it is the perfect social game which also provides our members with the opportunity, if they so wish, to take part in organised league matches and a variety of other competitions throughout the year. These include competitions for regional titles, competitions to select our representatives at an annual Inter-Regional Championship and Open competitions hosted and organised by individual Clubs. Within our membership we have both adults and juniors who have gained International honours in our sport.
All of our Clubs will welcome both beginners and experienced players and you should be able to find one located near you on our list of Affiliated Clubs. You will be made most welcome and helped and encouraged to play and enjoy our exceptional sport.
Best of all this is a sport where anyone and everyone can enjoy a very social sport on a completely equal basis.
