Shedfield Classic Triples (24th August)

20 teams from Southern Region and Isle of Wight took part in fine weather at Sam’s Hotel, playing morning 4-team leagues and afternoon knock–out competitions.

Competition Team Players
Main Trophy Winners WEFRABO Wendy Watkins, Frank Lennon,
Bob Bish
Main Runners-up KDM Kath Knight, Dave Stubbs,
Mike Knight
Plate Winners JORJI John Pollinger, Robin Lovelock,
Jill Lovelock
Main Consolant Winners Les Cacouettes Mary Sheppard, Tony Smith,
Steve Harwood
Plate Consolant Winners JASONJA Jason Wilcocks, Sonja Borozan
Spoon Winners Trust Me Trish Neville, Mike Sheppard,
Tiny Neville

The Main Competition Final was hotly contested, the winners recovering from a 5-9 deficit to take the trophy by the smallest possible margin.

At the other end of the spectrum the Spoon Competition was conducted with relaxed insouciance by the morning’s four least successful teams, which mostly featured keen but modest players - evidently with much to be modest about. However, it has to be recorded that the line-up actually included a former BPA National President, a 2003 National Ladies Doubles Team Champion player, the Southern Region Umpire, and a former England International player ... how are the mighty fallen!

National Ladies Triples (13th July)

There was more success for our Southern Region ladies at this competition held at Luton.

Winners Ness Webb (Unattached),
Angie Jamieson (Foxdale),

A great pity that only 21 teams entered (and 20 turned up - I wonder if 'Hugo and Jimmy' are still lost!) as for the second year running this competition was played in glorious warm sunshine on a Saturday afternoon at Burridge. Those who played enjoyed another of Pete Young's excellent BBQs and some very good but friendly petanque. Many thanks to the teams who travelled from afar - Lamb, Leatherhead, Adur, Croydon and Crondall but what happened to the locals? They can't all have been watching Saints play the Hammers!
A 2 p.m. start and timed games of 40 minutes saw the competition completed by 8p.m. and there was even time for a break in play to watch the Grand National (sweepstake won by Pam Treend!). The holders Dave and Kath narrowly lost out in the semi-finals.The score being tied at 10-10 when time was called but an extra deciding end saw the winning point go to Pam and Elwyn. The final was won by Paul and Sheila who seem to like this terrain having triumphed here in the Regional Summer Doubles a couple of years ago!

Results were as follows

Competition Position Players
Main Winners Paul and Sheila Hayward (Limesdowne)
Runners-up Pam Treend and Elwyn Morgan (Farmhouse)
Semi-finalists Kath Knight (Lamb) and Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts)

2003 Regional Quiz

This was held at The Lamb, Yapton, on Friday 28th February. Support from Southern Region clubs was very poor, but we are grateful to the following clubs for coming along: Cobbetts, Farmhouse, Lamb, Worthing, Worthing Juniors, Shedfield and Southampton City (your attendance very much appreciated). Southampton City and Elvis's Disciples (Lamb) were neck and neck for first place until the very last round (when the Disciples realised that if they won The Lamb would have to run it again next year!) . The scoring on the continuous round (Underground Stations) saw Cobbetts Encore creep from 4th place to first place. There was a tie for 2nd place between Southampton City and Cobbetts Lovers - the latter team gaining the ascendancy on a tie-breaker. The teams enjoyed a sandwich supper at half-time. The 2004 quiz will be back at Burridge next year - it's Min's fault for living in London for so long! The results were:

Worthing Junior/Parents Afternoon

On Saturday, 11th January, eighteen of the Worthing Juniors brought a parent each along to show them the ropes of petanque (you didn't know you could do it with ropes did you?!). It was a cold cold day so we only had 3 games in the snake competition, with drinks and hot sausage rolls afterwards. Only 3 of the parents had played before - 1 only very new, but several were very interested and would like to continue playing. Both parents and juniors want us to hold another such competition in the summer. The results were:
