SCPA Winter Mêlée, Crondall

Because the scheduled first Winter Mêlée at Limesdowne was not held due to bad weather, this event was effectively the first of the series. Although the weather was fine, dry and mild, there was a very disappointing turnout of only 9 players, 7 of these from the host club. Nevertheless, four enjoyable games were played and the prizewinners (all from Crondall) were:

1st Gabor Verebelyi 3 wins, +11
2nd Liz Farrow 3 wins, +9 (pts for=44)
3rd Lesley Manning 3 wins, +9 (pts for=43)
Secretary's Cup

There was a remarkably good turnout of 19 teams for this event held at the Admiral Cunningham on a fine November day. Many of the clubs in the region were represented and the snake format was used with each team playing 3 games in the morning and 2 after lunch. Two of the teams won all five games, with Crondall (Liz Farrow, Harrison Ash and Colin Philip) winning the cup, just beating the Executive team (Kath Knight, Dave Stubbs and Richard Baker) by 2 points.

Nine-a-side Salver

There was a disappointing turnout of only four clubs to play in this event held at Crondall. In very blustery and changeable weather, each team played 5 games. It was a close-run match with first and second places being decided on points. The results were:

1st Crondall 10 wins, +47
2nd Horse & Jockey 10 wins, +38
3rd Farmhouse 5 wins, -33
4th Adur 5 wins, -55

Worthing Juniors Open

29 teams played at Burridge on Sunday, 16th October in this competition well organised by the Worthing Juniors as always. Unfortunately, the morning sunshine gave way to heavy rain by mid-afternoon. The Main competition was won by Sheila Hayward from Limesdowne partnered by one of the Limes twinning contingent from Vannes, who beat Michael Tull and Matt Slater (Bordon) in a very hard fought final. The Plate competition was won by Steve Love (Cobbetts) and Loren Butt (Shedfield). Full results to follow.

SCPA Summer Doubles

The 6 finalists played a round-robin at Burridge on Saturday, 15th October in glorious sunshine, very fitting for the Summer Doubles. The winners for the past 3 years were unable to make it 4 in a row and had to settle for 2nd place this year! Mark and Richard were very worthy winners being unbeaten on the day - although Dave & Bob still can't believe they lost from 11-1 up!

Winners Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne) & Richard Patterson (Lamb) 5 wins +36
Runners-Up Ian Burchell & Stuart Hale (Horse & Jockey) 3 wins +7
3rd Steve Love (Cobbetts) & Loren Butt (Shedfield) 3 wins -7

Inter-Regional Competition

Held at Brean Sands over the weekend of 17th and 18th September. The SCPA squad came a very creditable 3rd and were 4th in the Challenge Cup.

A special mention also for the SCPA juniors (Stuart Floyd, David Plumhoff, Shane King and Charlotte Dennis) who were representing Devon and finished as Best Junior team with 11 wins +72 and narrowly missed being best overall team, pipped by London 1 who had the same number of wins but were +82!

The morning leagues were played in torrential rain but it did get a bit better for the afternoon knock-outs! A close fought final saw the defending champions retain their title 13-11 against Dave, Mike and Jenny, who proved an able substitute for Kath who was away in Canada with the GB Juniors.

SCPA Qualifier 2

Held at Farmhouse on Sunday 3rd July, with 22 of the 23 teams who entered the first qualifier present for the second round. The missing team was Horse and Jockey 2. As winners of the 2004 Regional Doubles, Ian and Stuart were playing in the Founders Cup at Luton (and duly reached the semi-final). As they were representing the SCPA, it was agreed by the playing committee that their result from the first qualifier would be doubled.

The top 12 teams have qualified for the Masters weekend to be held at the Admiral Cunningham on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July.

Unfortunately only 7 players turned up at a very hot and sunny Shedfield on Saturday, 18th June. In fact it was two triples teams (KDM and The Blue Army) plus Mark Robertshaw who took part in a round robin to produce this year's champion.

Held at Limesdowne on Sunday 5th June, with a very encouraging entry of 23 teams. Even more pleasing was the fact that these 23 teams included players from 20 different clubs coming from all reaches of the Southern Counties area.

The top teams contested the finals in glorious sunshine at Burridge on Saturday, March 19th. Redlynch Valentines

30 teams were at Redlynch on Sunday, 13th February for this triples competition with teams from as far afield as Croydon, Harrow and the Isle of Wight joining the regulars from the Southern Counties and the New Forest. A good day was enjoyed by all despite a lengthy break in play to allow a blizzard to pass through!

The snake system was used and three teams won all 5 of their games. The winners were KDM, Kath Knight, Dave Stubbs and Mike Knight. Runners-up were La Boulles (?) from Croydon (Jean-Guy, Mary and David) and Hamworthy were 3rd.

The prize for the first fanny went to the Lamb team of Graham Elcome, Richard Patterson and John Ingles and was inflicted by their club mates KDM!

SCPA Winter Mêlée, The Ship

33 players were at The Ship on Sunday, 6th February for the second mêlée of the year.
