A frosty, sunny start at Shedfield on Sunday, 10th December with 16 players present, increasing to 18 as a couple of stragglers from the home club arrived and joined in! Not surprisingly Ship players took home most of the prize money as 11 of those present were from the Owslebury club.

Kath Knight (Lamb) and Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) completed a hat-trick of doubles titles by winning all 5 matches with a slightly better points difference than the runners-up Dave and Chris Low (Wanderers). Also winning all 5 games were Terry Perch and partner from Hamworthy (3rd) and Nigel Sibbring and Tony Watson from Handcross (4th).

SCPA Nine-a-side Salver

On Sunday, 29th October, on a gloriously warm and sunny autumn day at Crondall, 6 clubs provided 9 players to compete in a set of triples games. Three teams of 3 from each club played similar teams from every other club so that everybody played 5 games. After some very tough games, Crondall managed to retain the Salver for a third year running, the results being:

1st Crondall 12 wins, +46
2nd Southampton City 10 wins, +8

SCPA Quiz Night

A busy day at Burridge saw the regional quiz taking place just a few hours after the Summer Doubles final had ended. Pam and Trevor Treend from Farmhouse were surprise early leaders, being a team of two up against the other 9 teams who all had four members! As the evening progressed the lead changed hands numerous times before the Lamb Lovlies (Kath Knight, Mike Knight, Angela Parker and Colin Parker) eventually ran out winners to continue the to-ing and fro-ing of the trophy between Lamb and Cobbetts. Runners-up were Cobbetts 1 (Glenn Floyd, Alison Stubbs, Mike Porter and Eddie Wilson).

SCPA Summer Doubles

The top 8 teams contested the finals at Burridge on Saturday, 28th October. The forecast was not good, however the weather stayed dry but cloudy. After being beaten 13-0 in their first game by Mike and Paul, Ian and Stuart recovered to win their next two matches and take second place in their league. A Hampshire Rose team was guaranteed to be in the final as Ian met Barbara in the semi-final. A win for Ian and Stuart saw a rematch with Mike and Paul who beat Dave and Bob in the other semi. Ian and Stuart got their revenge by taking the title with a 13-6 win.

Winners Ian Burchell & Stuart Hale (Hampshire Rose)
Runners-up Mike Sheppard & Paul Hayward (Limesdowne)
3rd Dave Stubbs & Bob Thomas (Cobbetts)
4th Barbara Burchell & John Billet (Hampshire Rose)
5th Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne) & Richard Patterson (Adur)

SCPA Doubles

Only 17 teams turned up for the Regional Doubles at Limes on Sunday, 22nd October - the rest must have heard the weather forecast! Most of the competition was played in heavy rain but there was still some very high standard play.

Loren & Julie played exceptionally well to beat the two Richards 13-12 in the quarter-final and then fought back from 9-0 down before narrowly losing 13-11 to Dave & Kath in the semi. Last year's finalists met in the other semi-final and last year's winners triumphed again. However, Hilary & Gianni could not make it two titles in a row, losing somewhat heavily to Dave & Kath.

Chris reckons this is the first time he has been fannied for 3 years. In the main final Dave and Kath took a 9-0 lead before Glenn and Chris started their comeback. In what turned out to be a very hard fought game, Kath and Dave eventually ran out 13-9 winners.

20 teams entered this event (up from 16 last year) and the finals day, Sunday 8th October, was a nice sunny day. The semi-finals were both closely fought. Racing Club just managed to defeat Hampshire Rose 3-2 with a 13-12 win in one of the doubles. Adur overcame Cobbetts 4-1 but only by 13-11 and 13-12 in the deciding doubles.
