Lamb Winter Open, Burridge

The last event of the year took place on 30th December with the weather surprisingly warm and sunny. The number of teams varied during the day as several little problems beset some of the players - for instance: breaking down en route, getting lost in the wilds of Hampshire, having such a good holiday in Bulgaria that all things English were forgotten, turning up at The Lamb instead of Burridge, to name but a few! However, with a re-shuffle of the morning leagues, play got underway about 10:20 am and by lunchtime we had caught up with ourselves.

In the afternoon, after Mike’s famous bacon rolls and soups, league winners and the next best two went into the Main, the next 8 went into the Plate and the remaining 8 into the Spoon Snake. In the Main and Plate competitions the first-round losers went into the respective Consolages, so everyone had at least 5 games.

The results were as follows:

Competition Players
Main Winners Farmhouse A  (Bob Buxton and Eugene Finnegan)
Runners-up Hampshire Rose  (Mark Robertshaw and Richard Patterson)
Semi-finalists Kami   (Karen Lombard and Mike Knight)

SCPA Winter Mêlée, Shedfield

The forecast of gales and heavy rain obviously put off a lot of people as only 10 players were at Shedfield on Sunday 9th December for the start of the second winter mêlée. As it turned out the first three rounds were played in the dry and there was even some sunshine! A few late arrivals increased the numbers to 13 before the rain eventually arrived and forced an early end to round four.

2nd Don Power (Shedfield) 3 wins, +19
3rd Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) 3 wins, +9

SCPA Mixed Doubles

Despite the appalling weather and the clock change all 32 teams entered duly arrived at the Limes at the right time on Sunday, 28th October! John Billett, half of last year's winning team made a valiant effort to defend his title, this time partnered by Beth Godwin, but lost out in the semi-final to one of our juniors Charlotte Dennis who was playing with Daniel Hill. It was a good day for the junior ladies of the region with Helen Manley reaching the other semi-final with Graham Elcome. Having beaten Helen and Graham, the home team pairing of Mary Sheppard and Jed Stone went on to take the title by beating Charlotte and Daniel 13-8 after a very tense final played in torrential rain. SCPA Summer Doubles

A lovely sunny day saw the top 8 teams contesting the finals at Burridge on Saturday, 20th October. Two teams won all of their three games in the morning leagues and fittingly these two teams won their respective semi-finals so that they met in the final. The opening few ends were very even before some very accurate pointing gave Dave & Bob a '6-ender' to take a 10-4 lead. Karen & Mark hit back immediately with some excellent play to score a 4 and a 3 and eventually they took the title by the closest of margins 13-12.

SCPA Triples

It was a lovely sunny day at Adur on Sunday, 23rd September but there was a slightly disappointing entry of 12 teams. After the morning leagues, the top 8 teams contested the main knockout and the remaining 4 teams played a round robin in the plate. Having scraped into the main in 8th place, KDM quickly dispatched the top qualifiers Blue Army and then repeated the feat to beat Crondall in the semi-final. The other semi-final saw a very hard fought battle won 13-12 by The Slugs (a.k.a. Les Escargot!) against Golddust. KDM then raced into a 12-4 lead in the final only for The Slugs to hit back with a 6 and a 2 to draw level. The Slugs then won the deciding end to take the regional triples title by the narrowest of margins.

There were some fine junior performances from Sam and Christian who both reached the main quarter finals and Neil and Callum. The latter just losing out in the final of the Wooden Spoon to Dave and Gina from the Lamb. SCPA Singles and Shooting Competition

A pleasantly sunny Sunday at Bordon on 20th May saw 26 players competing for the this year's SCPA Singles title. After playing 5 games in the morning leagues, Chris Wilcox (Oxshott) and Dave Stubbs were both undefeated. Chris fell to Mark Duncan in the first game after lunch and Mark went on to reach the semi-final before narrowly losing 13-12 to last year's runner up Frank Charlesworth. Frank missed out yet again losing the final 13-6 to Dave (who himself had been runner-up on several occassions but had never before won the title). A special mention for Neil Floyd who was in last place after the morning leagues but bounced back to win the Plate in the afternoon. A great example of how you should never get despondent and give up.

Competition Player
Main Winner Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts)
Runner-up Frank Charlesworth (Oxshott)
Semi-finalist Mark Duncan (Hampshire Rose)
Semi-finalist Harrison Ash (Crondall)
Main Consolage Winner Don Power (Shedfield)
Runner-up Michael Tull (Bordon)
Plate Winner Neil Floyd (Hampshire Rose)
Runner-up Bernie Miles (Southampton City)
Plate Consolage Winner Kath Knight (Lamb)
Runner-up Pauline Baxter (Oxshott)

For the first time the SCPA Shooting Competition was run alongside the Singles and this seemed to work very well with 15 players taking part. However, it was very hard work for Liz and a couple of extra non-playing helpers would be nice next time!

Michael and Reynald both scored highly in the first round but could not repeat their efforts in the last 8, although Reynald only just missed out on a place in the top 4. Dave scored consistently to reach the last 4 along with Stuart, Ashley and Mike. Dave went first in the final but was tiring from his efforts in the Singles (that's his excuse anyway!) and scored 18. This surprisingly proved enough to give him runner-up spot ahead of Stuart and Ashley but not enough to prevent Mike taking the title.

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3

Worthing Open Doubles

On a surprisingly dry day at Lancing Leisure Centre on Sunday 25th March, Worthing PC held their first full open competition. There were 26 teams from all over the Southern Counties as well as teams from the Isle of Wight, London, Kent and Anglian Regions. Ages ranged from 11yrs to elder statesmen!
We were all kept very fit between games with the 5-mile walk to the loos and the bar around all the building work going on at the leisure centre! Thanks must go to Brian Searle from Adur PC for all his help in setting up and tidying away and to Chris Barron, who proved himself a most capable seller of raffle tickets!
The prizes were presented by the President of Worthing PC, Mr John Townsend-Green. Special mention must go to the junior team of ‘Bye’ (Christian Waller and Martin Brooks) who made the Plate Competition and even more to the junior team of ‘Washing Machine’ (Dan Stanley and Mike Priest) who made the top 8 of the Main Competition.

Lamb Winter Open Doubles, Burridge

Held at Burridge on Saturday, 30th December 2006 with an excellent turn out of 36 teams including a welcome first visit from 2 teams from the Whitnash club in the West Midlands. After a sunny start to the day the weather took a turn for the worse after lunch. However play continued without interruption, unlike at nearby St Mary's Stadium where kick-off was delayed in Southampton's match by 45 minutes because of the torrential rain - those footballers are such wimps! Hampshire Rose 2 won a close fought final against Farmhouse 13-9. The plate final was the last game to finish at around 6pm and both teams deserve credit for continuing in the atrocious conditions. The Lamb A team just beat Crondall A 13-10. Full results were as follows:
