Lamb Winter Open, Burridge

The last event of the year, held on 28th December, was as popular as ever with 26 teams competing on a cold, but sunny and bright day. The format in the morning was leagues of four (with one league of six), with main, plate, and two spoon competitions after the usual lunch of Mike's excellent bacon rolls and soup. There was an splendid raffle and plenty of prizes, shared out among the following:

Second SCPA Winter Mêlée, Shedfield

The second of the Winter Mêlées was held at Shedfield on Sunday, December 6th. There were around 25 players (difficult to say exactly how many with several comings and goings during the morning!) braving the icy conditions, but eventually the pitch did thaw in the winter sunshine. Jed took the honours by being the sole winner of all 4 games ahead of numerous players on 3 wins, including amazingly three all on +16!

1st Jed Stone (Limesdowne) 4 wins, +29
2nd Chris Derrick (Ship) 3 wins, +21
3rd Julie Beckett (Shedfield) 3 wins, +16 (44-28)
4th Keith Green (Ship) 3 wins, +16 (43-27)
5th Maureen Moir (Ship) 3 wins, +16 (42-26)
Friendliest Player Sue Sandy (Cobbetts) 1 win, -24

First SCPA Winter Mêlée, Limesdowne

With around 80 members attending the AGM, it was somewhat disappointing that there were only 15 entries, from just 5 clubs, for the first of the winter mêlées (compared with 40 last year). Presumably the heavy rain in the morning meant that most people had already decided not stay on after the meeting despite it turning into a dry but cold afternoon.

1st Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) 3 wins, +28
2nd Dave Newbold (Lamb) 3 wins, +26
3rd Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) 3 wins, +13

SCPA Secretary's Cup

On Sunday 16th November the Secretary’s Cup was held at Oxshott PC. This competition is for members of club or Regional committees as a ‘Thank You’ for their work for pétanque over the year. 12 teams competed, representing 9 clubs and the Regional Executive. The weather was kind for half the day then the damp set in! The great hospitality shown to us by members of the Oxshott club more than made up for this, and we thank them for it. There were prizes at all levels and the results were as follows:

Position Team Result
Winners Oxshott 5 wins +46
Runners-up Cobbetts 1 4 wins +22 (63 for)
Next best of 4 wins Bordon 4 wins +22 (60 for)
Best of 3 wins Crondall 3 wins +9
Best of 2 wins Handcross 2 wins +10
Best of 1 win Ship 1 1 win -18
Friendliest team ABC 1 win -23
First Fanny Ship 2

For the 4 teams who were not placed there was a small consolation ‘goodie’ bag!

SCPA Doubles

There were 24 teams at Southampton City on Sunday, October 26th on a grey and wet day. As often seems to be the way, the 8th team from the morning leagues, Paul & Sheila Hayward, beat the No 1 team, Jed Stone & Jackie Lee, in an all Limesdowne quarter-final. They followed this by beating another Limes team, Danny Corp and Tony Jones, in the semi-final. Meanwhile, Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves, having beaten last year’s champions Graham Galton and Andy Powell in their morning league, went on to beat another team playing on their home terrain, Gianni & Hilary Dalmasso, in the other semi-final. In the final, the lead changed hands several times before, at 10-10, a ‘trick shot’ by Paul with the last boule of the end left them on for 3 to give Paul and Sheila the title.

Competition Players
Main Winners Sheila & Paul Hayward (Limesdowne)
Runners-up Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts)
Semi-finalist Danny Corp & Tony Jones (Limesdowne)

SCPA Summer Doubles Finals

The top 8 teams from the 24 who entered the competition were at Burridge on Saturday, October 18th to compete for the June Lombard Memorial Trophy. Fittingly this included June’s son, daughter-in-law and grandson – Steve, Karen and Callum.   After a very hard fought battle Dave Stubbs and Richard Greeves beat last year’s winners Karen Lombard and Mark Duncan 13-10 in one semi-final. In the other semi-final were Bob Bish and Wendy Watkins, who had almost withdrawn from the final as Bob had broken his right elbow and left finger playing cricket! Despite this handicap they had won two of their morning games but were defeated 13-5 by Steve and Callum. This meant that the two teams that had won all of their 3 morning games were in the final. Dave and Richard ran out 13-4 winners in the glorious October sunshine and ended the competition undefeated.

Position Players
Winners Richard Greeves & Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts)
Runners-up Steve & Callum Lombard (Cobbetts/Hampshire Rose)
3rd Karen Lombard & Mark Duncan (Hampshire Rose)
4th Bob Bish & Wendy Watkins (Shedfield)
5th Colin Philip & Liz Farrow (Crondall)
6th Mary & Mike Sheppard (Limesdowne)
7th Chris Derrick & Dave Lucas (Ship)
Unplaced Wayne & Sam Thatcher (Southampton City)

SCPA Mixed Doubles

There were 21 teams at Burridge on Sunday, October 12th and with thick fog it did not look like a very promising day. However, the fog lifted shortly after start of play and it turned out to be gloriously warm and sunny. After the morning leagues the cut for the Main competition could not have been closer with two Limesdowne teams, Paul & Sheila Hayward and Mike Sheppard & Jackie Lee, in equal 8th place with 2 wins +6.  Paul & Sheila had more ‘points for’ and made the most of getting through by defeating one of the more fancied teams, Karen Lombard and Michael Tull in the last 8. They then went on to beat Kath & Mike Knight (past winners of the competition in 1999 & 2000) 13-12 in the semi-final. Meanwhile Alison & Dave Stubbs fought back to beat another of the ‘bookies favourites’ last year’s champion Mary Sheppard playing this year with Mark Robertshaw. Dave & Alison defeated Paul & Sheila 13-4 in the final to take home the Ian Cook Memorial Trophy for the fourth time. This was a fitting victory as Ian was a member of the Cobbetts club and Dave & Alison were the first winners of the trophy when it was presented 25 years ago in 1983.

Competition   Players
Main Winners Alison & Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts)
Runners-up Sheila & Paul Hayward (Limesdowne)
Semi-finalist Mary Sheppard & Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne)
Semi-finalist Kath & Mike Knight (Lamb)
Main Consolage Winners Karen Lombard (Hampshire Rose) & Michael Tull (Bordon)
Runners-up Kaylee Thatcher & Graham Galton (Southampton City)

SCPA Singles

The late arrival of summer saw the sun shining at Bordon on 14th September and an excellent entry of 34 players competing for this year's SCPA Singles title. There was a familiar look to the main competition with three of last year’s semi-finalists reaching the same stage again. Mark Duncan went one better this year beating last year’s winner Dave Stubbs 13-10 in the semi-final while Harrison Ash lost to the eventual winner, Matt Slater. Matt and Mark were both undefeated going into the final and in close fought match Matt took the title with a 13-10 win. Michael Tull was runner-up in the Main Consolage for the 2nd year running losing to Glenn Floyd in the final. Doo won the Plate competition and Tomasz beat Jed, the 1996 champion, in the Plate consolage. With just two teams in the Wooden Spoon, Bernie and Kath played the ‘best of three’ with one game on each of the different terrains!

Competition Player

SCPA Shooting Competition

The SCPA Shooting Competition was again run alongside the Singles with 24 players taking part this year which must be a record for the competition (there were 15 last year). Thanks to Jack who was kept busy all day scoring and everyone who helped retrieve boules etc.

Last year’s winner Mike Knight just failed to make the cut for the 2nd round while last year’s runner-up Dave Stubbs again scored highly to lead after round 1. Some high scoring in the 2nd round saw 5 players going through to the last 4! There were 3 players with a score of 20 or more (enough to win the final!) who just missed out. Dave again used the excuse that 7 games of singles and 2 rounds of shooting had taken too much out of him. Going last (having triumphed in the games of ‘Paper, scissors, stone’ that decided the shooting order for the final!) he had to settle for 3rd place behind Harrison and this year’s champion Rod. So the winners were:

1st Rod Fisher
2nd Harrison Ash
3rd Dave Stubbs

The detailed results were:

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3
Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) 34 Harrison 34 Rod 19
Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) 31 Dave 33 Harrison 17

Inter-Regional Competition

This was held at Brean Sands over the weekend of 6th and 7th September in pretty appalling conditions. Unfortunately, the SCPA squad were not able to defend their 2007 win, but finished in 6th place and remained in the 1st Division. The Southern Juniors came in 5th in division 1. In the Challenge Cup, the SCPA team came 3rd (out of 11). Full details can be found on the EPA website (opens in a new window) and the Team Manager's reports are below (not all are available yet):

The Masters Competition was held at The Admiral Cunningham on the 19th and 20th July.  The Competition enjoyed two days of dry, warm and sunny weather after a short but heavy shower of rain before the start of play on Saturday.

As usual the teams that finished in the top 8 places will represent the SCPA in the EPA Inter-Regional Championship and the other teams will represent the SCPA in the Inter-Regional Challenge Trophy at Brean Sands on September 8th and 9th 2008.

Cobbetts Open Doubles

The forecast of snow did not put off too many people and 26 teams turned up at Burridge on Easter Sunday afternoon (March 23rd) for the Cobbetts Doubles. It turned out to be a cold day but much better day than expected with just one heavy hailstorm during the afternoon. One of last year's winners, Steve Lombard, was again in the final against one of last year's runners-up, Kath Knight. Steve, this time playing with Karen, triumphed again by beating Kath and Mike 13-4. An all Cobbetts plate final saw Dave Stubbs (playing with Alan Forse) beat his wife Alison (and Mike Porter) by the same score. The main consolage final was a much closer affair with Graham and Chris just beating Glenn and Steve 13-12. The junior team of Hannah and Rebecca narrowly lost to Wendy and Jackie in the wooden spoon final and the best junior team was Michael and Sam who qualified for the main competition.
