Arundel Winter Open
Arundel PC (ex Lamb PC) christened their new terrain at Arundel Football Club on 28th December 2009 with an Open Doubles competition. We managed to pick a fine, if bracing, day in amongst a few slightly less sunny ones! It was good to see teams from most parts of the Region. There were 25 in all, Mary and Mike Sheppard having to withdraw due to illness. After many filling up on Mike K’s bacon rolls, the play started in a 6 league format, with league winners and the next best 2 going into the Main knock-out competition, the next best 8 into the Plate and the remaining teams into a Spoon snake. Before the afternoon play there were warming soups and a selection of hot or cold desserts (well done Mike and Kath in the kitchen) while Peter fleeced everyone with his raffle requests! There was une petite probleme with the lights but this was overcome by using the football floodlights, and the final results were:

There were many complimentary remarks about the terrain and indeed about the whole set-up. All the work in preparing the ground (just the 20 tons of gravel then) was done by club members — age profile not very low! Many thanks go to them and to Arundel Football Club for making us so welcome. I expect they were very pleased to see the increase in their bar takings that day! And of course a big thank you to all those who came along to support us on the day.
SCPA Winter Mêlée, Shedfield
There were just 16 players at Shedfield on Sunday December 6th for the mêlée. Obviously most people must have assumed it would be pouring with rain and stayed at home but in fact all four rounds were played in lovely winter sunshine. Most of the players were from local clubs Cobbetts, Ship, Limes and Shedfield but one of our very keen juniors, Martin Brooks, had made the long journey from Worthing with his family.
| 1st | Wendy Watkins (Shedfield) | 3 wins, +17 |
| 2nd | Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) | 3 wins, +15 |
| Friendliest Player | Maureen Moir (Ship) | 1 wins, -22 |
Secretary's Cup
After dreadful weather the previous few days, we were lucky that Sunday, 15th November started bright and sunny. A goodly 16 teams had booked in - the maximum that could fit on the terrain at Amities Boules Club, Kirdford. Apart for a short, sharp shower just before lunch the weather was ideal. 13 of our clubs were represented - it was good to see our newest club, Cranleigh, put out 2 teams. The format was leagues and knockout, with 4 leagues of 4 playing three games in the morning, and 4 knockout competitions in the afternoon - Main, Plate, Saucer, and Spoon. The aim was to have just two games after lunch. The neighbours must have been curious as to what we were up to, as two of the finals were played to the accompanying ‘whirr’ of wind-up torches! This was because the heavy rains of the preceding few days had caused an unexpected problem with the lights towards the end of the day, but we were not deterred, we carried on regardless!
Thanks go to Ian Fox and ABC for making us so welcome in such a lovely setting, and for being so helpful, and also Ingrid for her superb efforts in selling raffle tickets.
Don’t forget, the day was a big THANK YOU for all that you committee members do for your clubs/region. Without you, pétanque wouldn’t exist as we know it in the Southern Counties.

Cobbett's Poppy Petanque Doubles
There were 16 teams at Burridge on Remembrance Day, Sunday, November 8th for the first Cobbetts Poppy Doubles and £100 was raised for the Poppy Appeal. After the morning leagues 4 teams had won all 3 games (Richard & Dave, Dean & Gemma, Chris & Stephen and Mike & Mary Sheppard). Mike and Mary couldn’t maintain their fine form from the morning but the other 3 teams all reached the semi-finals, including Stephen playing in his first competition for 9 years! Richard and Dave proved to be too strong on their home terrain and having beaten Dean & Gemma 13-6 went on to beat Roz and Matt 13-4 in the final.
4 players made it to the final of the ‘Shoot the Egg’ competition, Stan, Dean, Etsil and Dave with Dean eventually beating Dave in the shoot out.

Nine-a-side Salver
Seven teams of nine travelled to Crondall on Sunday, 1st November, to compete in this event. The weather was dreadful in the morning - unremitting rain and gusty winds, making play very difficult. However, the rain stopped by lunchtime and conditions were much improved. Because of the odd number, every team had a bye at some stage of the competition. After six games, the final results were:
| Winners | Cobbetts | 13 wins, +59 |
| Runners-up | Oxshott | 13 wins, +53 |
| Equal 3rd | Limes Leopards | 12 wins, +42 |
| Equal 3rd | Crondall | 12 wins, +42 |

| 6th | Adur | 7 wins, -40 |
| 7th | Limes Lions | 5 wins, -48 |
SCPA Doubles
This competition was held at Limesdowne on Sunday, 25th October. A lovely Autumn day saw 30 teams fight it out for the honour of representing the region in the Champion of Champions contest next year, which went to the first and second places in the main competition. It was encouraging that a number of younger members were playing. Three of the finals took place at the same time and this, especially the main, gave an excellent display for those who had stayed to watch. The results were:
| Main | Winners | Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) |
| Runners-up | Mike Tull & Matt Slater (Bordon) | |
| Semi-finalist | Stan Ash & Etsil Boukhobza (Crondall) | |

SCPA Summer Doubles Finals
The finals of the Summer Doubles were held at Burridge on Saturday, 17th October. It had been the intention to take 8 teams through to the finals out of the 16 that entered but with several teams unavailable it was decided to limit the number to 6.
The qualifiers were:
| 1 | Chris Derrick & Dave Lucas (Ship) | 12 wins | +86 |
| 2 | Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) | 11 wins | +51 |
| 3 | Paul & Sheila Hayward (Limesdowne) | 10 wins | +47 |
| 4 | Mark Duncan & Karen Lombard (Hampshire Rose) | 10 wins | +21 |
| 5 | Danny Corp & Tony Jones (Limesdowne) * | 9 wins | +42 |
| 6 | Mary Sheppard & Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne) | 8 wins | +30 |
| 7 | John Limburn & Patrick Conem (Shedfield) | 7 wins | -31 |
* Unavailable to play
This meant a ‘round-robin’ could be played with all the teams playing each other. The holder’s Dave & Richard successfully defended their title, and retained the June Lombard Memorial Trophy, by winning all 5 of their games. In a very close battle for 2nd place Dave & Chris pipped Paul & Sheila by just 1 point. Apart from the top two teams swapping places the final positions were the same as after the qualifiers!
| 1st | Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) | 5 wins | +46 |
| 2nd | Chris Derrick & Dave Lucas (Ship) | 3 wins | +3 |
| 3rd | Paul & Sheila Hayward (Limesdowne) | 3 wins | +2 |
| 4th | Mark Duncan & Karen Lombard (Hampshire Rose) | 2 wins | -8 |
| 5th | Mary Sheppard & Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne) | 1 win | -19 |
| 6th | John Limburn & Patrick Conem (Shedfield) | 1 win | -24 |
High Level Roofing Knockout Competition
There were 16 teams entered in the 6-a-side KO competition sponsored this year by The High Level Roofing Co. Four teams qualified for the finals which were held at the Ship Inn, Owslebury on Sunday, 11th October. In the morning semi-finals Southampton City Saints played Crondall and won 3-2, while Ship Mates played Ship Shapes, beating their clubmates 4-1. After a rather damp lunch period the final was played in drier weather and Southampton City Saints had a 3-2 win against Ship Mates.
SCPA Singles and Shooting Competition
A lovely warm and dry 27th September saw 45 singles being played at Shedfield, including juniors and cadets. This venue had not been used for regional competitions for some time, but will no doubt see further use.
The four terrains, two behind Sam’s Hotel and two over the recreation ground proved challenging. When the playing order was drawn all sorts of comments were heard from ‘how lovely’, ‘oh, no!’ to ‘I didn’t think I would be playing there - I am only used to the main terrain’.
The Shooting Competition was played in between the singles competition and Mike Sheppard is to be thanked for his help with the 33 people who entered. The first and second go to the Champion of Champions to play against all other regional winners. Dean Seville scored highly in all three rounds but several others closely chased him and so the final round saw eight people fighting for all of the places.

Worthing Open Doubles
On Saturday 5th September Worthing PC held its annual doubles competition at Burridge. The weather was kind and the event was supported by clubs from most areas of the Region. A handy 19½ teams entered and the day consisted of a 5-game snake, with a ‘break the egg’ shooting competition at lunchtime. The top 5 teams all finished on 4 wins and were only separated by points difference. For three of the players, Adam, Angela and Tony, it was their first competition, and I think they enjoyed their day. The results were as follows.

SCPA Mixed Doubles
There were 21 teams at Burridge on Sunday, September 13th, exactly the same number as last year for this competition! A very pleasant September morning saw the defending champions Alison and Dave come through the leagues unbeaten along with Wendy & Wayne Thatcher, Carol & Allan Paice and Jenny Peerman & Michael Tull. Three of these teams also won their first round games in the afternoon but Wendy & Wayne were beaten by Debbie & Dean, who then went on to beat Alison and Dave to reach the final. Having beaten Carol & Allan in the other semi-final, Jenny & Michael fell a long way behind in the final but staged a fighting comeback to get to 8-10 before finally losing out. It was great to see lots of the region’s ‘younger’ players taking part in this competition with one of our juniors, Sam Thatcher, winning the Plate with Peter Galton.

Hampshire Rose Open Doubles
An overcast and blustery day for the Hampshire Rose second event for the year greeted the Open Doubles on Sunday 30th August. There was a good turn out of 16 teams, travelling from as far a field as Kent, Sussex & Isle of Wight.
It was a very enjoyable day with leagues in the morning, and a shooting competition during Lunch. After some really close fought games in the afternoon, the final of the shooting competition took place consisting of 7 players with a final shootout between Dave Lucas and Chris Derrick who became the victor.
The top prizes of the Main Competition went to Kent.

SCPA Triples
16 teams entered the competition held at The Farmhouse on a cold and very windy 19th July. Leagues were played in the morning with the top 2 teams from each league going through to a main competition followed by those getting knocked out in the first round entering a consolage. The teams who came third and fourth in the morning leagues entered a plate compition with the first round losers also going into a consolage.
The final between the Hairey Dingle Bunnies and Outrage was closely fought. Both teams go to the Champion of Champions later in the year.
| Main | Winners | Outrage (Mike Tull, Ashley Odell, Harrison Ash, Matt Slater) |
| Runners-up | Hairey Dingle Bunnies (Graham Galton, David Plumhoff & John Billett) | |
| Main Consolage | Winners | Four Squared (Steve Lombard, Trevor Treend & Ben Treend) |

Playing at the same time were eight juniors in pairs. They played each other twice over the course of the day and resulted in 6 wins, +48 for Samantha and Kaylee Thatcher. All played with credit and were watched closely by the adults in between games with some good tactics being displayed. Second place went to Callum and Hannah Lombard, with the pairing of Martin Brooks with Jordan Johnson and Daniel Baker with Michael Priest adding to the games. Considering the young age of these players they lasted well and showed great maturity.

| 3rd | Southampton City 2 (Peter Galton, Wayne and Wendy Thatcher) | 4 wins |
SCPA Masters
On a very warm weekend (27th & 28th June) the 12 teams that had qualified to play at Brean Sands for Southern Counties met at the Limesdowne Petanque Club in Catisfield, near Fareham. Six games were played on the Saturday and a further five on the Sunday. Both days were lovely, with one or two spots of rain on the second day. The leaders on the Saturday were slowly overhauled as they appeared to be out of luck, finaly winning their last game and making them 4th. The three above them in the final rankings slowly overhauled the previous deficit making a very close finish. Outrage became the final winners although good team spirit was shown by everyone who made it a very good weekend of competition. The results were:

Southampton City Open
Given the dwindling number of triples events in the Region these days and with the Masters only a week away, more than twelve teams might have been expected to turn out for Southampton City's annual tournament on 21st June. However, a good spread of strong and experienced players from clubs across the Region - plus old friends from the Island - took part, on a warm day with clouds hiding the sun on-and-off. Morning play was in leagues, each of which ended, remarkably, with one team having won three games, one two, one one and one none. The three league winners plus the next best five teams went into the afternoon knockout, from which first round losers went into the Plate. The four triples who'd missed out on the knock-out played an afternoon league for the Wooden Spoon.
The second day of the annual Southampton Kite Festival was also taking place at Lord's Hill Outdoor Recreation Ground, while during the day a helicopter from Hampshire Air Ambulance and another from HM Coastguard landed and took off close by the terrain, all adding further to the atmosphere. A good time was had by all and half the teams entering took home prizes.
The results were:
| Main | Winners | Outrage (Matt Slater, Harrison Ash, Mike Tull) |
| Runners-up | Lombardos (Karen, Hannah and Steve Lombard) | |
| Semis | Saints (Richard Trent, Graham Galton, David Plumhoff) Entente Cordiale (Peter Galton, Patrice Conem, Wayne Thatcher) |

The Lamb Spring Open
There was changeable weather for the Lamb’s Liz Hordern Memorial Trophy competition held at Burridge on 7th June. There was a small, but select, entry of 16 teams, which made a league and knock-out morning ideal. It was good to welcome Jan and Tim from the Isle of Wight and to welcome back past-master Geoff Sully, who has not lost his touch after all these years of ‘resting’.
The prizes were presented by the Lamb PC President Mike Hordern, in memory of his wife Liz, who was a well-loved member of the club.

SCPA Adult/Junior Doubles
On a fairly warm Monday Bank Holiday Monday (4th May), 10 juniors joined their adult partners at Cobbetts, Burridge. The top 4 pairs from the morning’s leagues entered the main competition in the afternoon, while the next 4 battled it out in the plate. This left 2 contestants, including 7 year old Declan, who was playing in his first competition, joined by his more experienced father. These two played against last year’s winners of the competition, losing out on the best of three games.
The final was a close fought contest with both of the juniors pointing extremely well whilst the adult did the shooting. This was an entertaining game to watch and like all the games played in excellent spirit by adults and juniors alike. Many of the adults commented afterwards how much they had really enjoyed the day.

Cobbetts Open Doubles
There were 18 teams at Burridge on Sunday, April 12th for this event. Dave and Alan, last year’s plate winners, were trying to go one better this year by winning the main competition. With a 12-5 lead in the final they seemed set to achieve this but Paul and Sheila hit back in style by taking 6 points in the next end. However, Dave and Alan recovered to win the next end and the honour of being the first names on the new perpetual trophy.
7 players made it to the final of the ‘Shoot the Egg’ competition and the first round saw Dave, Tomasz, Chris Barron, Sam Thatcher and Mike Knight eliminated. Mark Duncan, the winner the previous week at Hampshire Rose, could not quite repeat the feat and eventually shared the prize with Steve Lombard. These two teams met in the first match of the morning and Mike & Mary upset the form book by winning 13-12 (having led 12-5!). Harrison & Ashley recovered well to win their next two games and win their league. Steve & Karen won all three of their games to top the other league. In the semi-finals, Steve & Karen beat Mike & Mary and Harrison & Ashley comprehensively beat the Summer Doubles Champions Richard & Dave. SCPA Quiz
The annual SCPA Quiz was held on Friday 27th February at The Limes. There was a reasonable turn-out of 8 teams but disappointingly only 5 clubs were represented (plus Tiny and Trish from Shedfield who, along with Mary Sheppard and Dave Meyer from Limes, were last year’s winners and so had the dubious honour of organising this year!) All of those who did take part had a very enjoyable evening.
The Lamb team (Mike and Kath Knight, Tim and Micheline Lawson) had built up an early 6 point lead by Round 3 but a couple of good scores saw RADS (Dave and Alison Stubbs, Richard and Sue Greeves) draw level by Round 5. It was neck and neck from there on in with The Lamb never more than 2 points ahead. The ‘running round’ on ‘ologies, ‘ectomies and phobias proved to be the decider with RADS picking up 24 points to The Lamb’s 21 to take the title back to Cobbetts for at least the 8th time! The 3 person Cobbetts team of Alan and Penny Forse and Marie Gravell also did very well to take 3rd place.
| Winners | RADS (Cobbetts) | 97 |
| Runners-up | The Lamb | 95 |
| 3rd | Cobblers (Cobbetts) | 86 |
| 4th Equal | Top Table (Limes) | 78 |
| 4th Equal | Lime Pickle (Limes) | 78 |
| 6th | Dynamites (Cobbetts/Limes) | 70 |
| 7th | Oddbods (Limes/Ship) | 56 |
| 8th | Hampshire Lamb | 48 |
