Arundel Winter Doubles

Not below freezing temperatures and snow for The Arundel Winter Open but warmer and damp! 18 teams entered (perhaps some areas were still snowed in) on Tuesday 28th December. Unfortunately 1 team was unable to attend due to illness. So, 17 teams battled for the Main Cup and the Plate. The morning was 3 leagues of 4 and 1 league of 5. League winners and runners-up went through to the Main, with first round losers continuing in a main consolage. The rest of the field played a 3-game snake in the afternoon for the Plate. Tummies were warmed at lunch time with Peter’s bacon rolls and soups. Tomasz ran the ‘break the egg’ competition at lunchtime too. Many thanks to all those who supported us by playing on the day, and to all APC members who helped before the event, or on the day. Particular thanks to the team that travelled all the way down from Leicester! Well done. It was quite eerie walking from the clubhouse to the terrain towards the end of the day - mist had descended and it looked as if the finals were being played on a cloud - the lighting and silence enhanced the other-worldliness of the moment!!

The results were as follows:

Main Winners Dean Seville and Chris Wilcox
Runners-up Tomasz Rypien and Sean Prendergast
Semi-finalist Peter Maynard and Derek Coates
Semi-finalist Debbie Elcome and JJ
Main Consolage Winners Frank Charlesworth and Christine Peet
Runners-up Richard Patterson and Kim Elcome

Cobbett's Poppy Doubles

There were 20 teams booked in for the Cobbetts Poppy Doubles at Burridge on Remembrance Day, Sunday, 14th November, but there were a couple of teams that did not show up which delayed the start slightly. Hannah Lombard and Wendy Thatcher teamed-up at the last minute to give us 19 playing teams. Last year’s winners, Richard Greeves and Dave Stubbs, found themselves in the Plate having missed the cut for the Main by the narrowest of margins. They had the same points difference as Malcolm and Shelley McKenzie from Limes but had scored fewer points for! Roz Silvester and Lyn May, having beaten Michael Tull and Wayne Thatcher in their morning league, unfortunately found themselves up against them again in the first round in the afternoon but could not repeat the feat. Malcolm and Shelley continued to progress by defeating the top team after the morning leagues, Flight Refuelling 1 (Mike Gillingham and Pete Dorrington), 13-12. Tomasz Rypien and Karen Lombard beat one of our newest players, Barbara Felstead who has just joined Cobbetts, who was playing with one of our older ones Alan Baker! They then went on to beat Michael and Wayne in the semi-final and then overcame Malcolm and Shelly 13-7 in the final. Dave and Richard won the Plate after two all Cobbetts semi-finals! Another one of Cobbetts’ newest members, Paula Fauvel, won the Wooden Spoon along with Ken Chapman also from Cobbetts. Profits from the competition will be donated to the Poppy Appeal.

4 players made it to the final of the ‘Shoot the Egg’ competition, Richard Greeves, Tomasz Rypien, Mike Tull and Dave Stubbs with Tomasz winning the bottle of whisky with the only hit in the final.

Main Winners Karen Lombard (Hampshire Rose) & Tomasz Rypien (Arundel)

SCPA Secretary's Cup

On the fresh, bitterly cold morning, the Regional Secretary had the honour to use the spanking new club hut for running the 2010 Secretary’s Cup. Luckily, the temperature rose a little during the day, and the 17 triples that entered (from 13 clubs + Regional Executive) did not become cryogenic specimens. The snake system was used, with 3 games before lunch and 2 in the afternoon. Prizes were spread throughout, as the following results show.

The competition is THANK YOU for club/regional committee members for the work they do for our sport over the year(s). Without them, the region could not function. Also thanks to The Ship PC for hosting us.

SCPA 9-a-side Salver

Played on Sunday, 31st October, at the home of last year’s champions, Cobbetts, this competition had never before attracted so many entries with 13 teams wanting to play. Unfortunately, we were only able to accommodate 10 of these. Nevertheless, the number of players (90) was greater than had played in any other matches for several seasons.

The weather was much kinder than for the last two years and although it was the last day of October, the light morning rain did not persist.

The morning saw some close games which gave 4 teams for a semi-final with the remaining teams battling it out for the remaining places. In the semi finals Southampton City beat The Ship whilst Oxshott were beaten by Farmhouse. The two losing teams then played each other for 3rd and 4th places. The final between Farmhouse and Southampton City was played under the gathering darkness with the lights on. The results were:

1st Southampton City
2nd Farmhouse
3rd The Ship
4th Oxshott
5th Adur
6th Cobbetts A
7th Limesdowne Leopards
8th Limesdowne Lions
9th The Admiral
10th Cobbetts B

SCPA Doubles

28 teams entered the competition on Sunday, 24th October at the Limes on a bright, but very cold day. Fortunately it stayed dry all day. The final was played under the floodlights and did not finish until nearly 7pm, in a closely fought game that swung one way and then the other. Several people put up very good performances whilst others were disappointed with their bad form at the end of the season. On the whole an enjoyable day and the large number of spectators who watched the final showed what a well-supported day it had been. The first and second teams in the Main competition will represent the region at the Champion of Champions competition next year.

Runners-up Dave Stubbs and Richard Greeves

Arundel Lights Doubles

On Sunday, 17th October, a beautiful warm and sunny day, Arundel Pétanque Club held a doubles competition to celebrate the installation of new lights on the terrain. 27 teams from all over the Southern Counties, the neighbouring Sussex Region and the Isle of Wight entered the competition. The morning format was 6 leagues of 4 plus one of 3, with league winners and next best team going into the main section of the afternoon knock-outs. The next best 8 made up the Plate competition and the last 11 went into the Spoon. First round losers in the afternoon were able to carry on playing as there were consolage events for the Main and the Plate sections.

Only 5 teams won all their morning games. One of which was junior Martin Brooks,(Arundel) playing with newcomer Peter Smith (Arundel). Favourites looked to be David Plumhoff (Southampton City) and Mike Tull (Bordon) who stormed through the morning games 13-0, 13-1, 13-0, but lost out in the final to Tomasz Rypien (Arundel) and Karen Lombard (Hampshire Rose).

Arundel teams were strong at the other end of the scale too. John Barnes and Pat Parsons were the strongest team, holding up all the others. The Plate was also won by Arundel players Mike Knight and Geoff Sully.

EPA Champion of Champions

Richard Greeves and Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) along with Michael Tull and Matt Slater (Bordon) represented the SCPA in the EPA Champion of Champions Doubles held at the York Railway Institute on Saturday, October 2nd. Richard and Dave won all four of their league matches to qualify for the semi-finals but unfortunately Michael and Matt just missed out, finishing 5th with three wins out of four. In the semi-finals Dave and Richard beat the Chiltern 2 team, whose presence at the competition was much disputed, 13-8 to go through to the final against East Midlands 1. In a closely fought game the lead changed hands several times before the team of Stone Williams and Clare Brooks eventually achieved a narrow 13-11 victory.

Sunday, October 3rd saw the EPA Champion of Champions Triples being held at the same venue but the sunshine of the previous day was replaced by torrential rain. Dave and Richard were again representing the SCPA along with Alan Forse (also Cobbetts). Sadly the other SCPA triples team had to pull out. Play was suspended midway through the first game as the terrain flooded and it eventually resumed after much hard work by Richard, Danny Sims (Chiltern) and a few others to dig drainage channels under (and through) the surrounding sleepers! It was decided that, after the first round, subsequent games would be played to 11. Dave, Richard and Alan were well placed with two wins from three and only a narrow 10-11 loss to Chiltern 1. They were just commencing their fourth game when the heavens opened again and play was suspended for the second time. The decision was eventually taken to cancel the competition as the forecast was for the rain to continue. A very disappointing end to what had been a very good weekend with an excellent entry from around the regions despite the long journeys required for many. Finally, a special mention for Bob Bish (Shedfield) who represented the region in the shooting competition.

SCPA Singles & Shooting Competitions

The venue was Shedfield on a cool, windy day with 35 entries. Three different terrains were used for the singles competition which led to some surprising results during the day.

Main 1st Sean Prendergast
2nd David Plumhoff
Semi-finalists Doo Gopall
Semi-finalists Michael Tull
Main Consolage 1st Dean Seville
2nd Samantha Thatcher
Semi-finalists Kaylee Thatcher
Semi-finalists Thomasz Rypien
Plate 1st Dave Stubbs
2nd Bernie Miles
Semi-finalists Loren Butt
Semi-finalists Steve Snudden
Plate Consolage 1st Richard Greeves
2nd Matt Silvester
Semi-finalists Gordon Shakespeare
Semi-finalists Sam Snudden
Spoon 1st Malcolm McKenzie

In the shooting competition the results of the eight players in the play-off were fairly close except for the overall winner who was ahead by a substantial margin. The winner and runner-up will represent the SPCA in the EPA champion of Champions shooting competition in York on 2nd/3rd October.

Winner Dean Seville
Runner-up Bob Bish

Inter-Regional Competition, Brean Sands

This took place at Pontin’s Brean Sands on the weekend of 18th/19th September 2010. In spite of cold breeze, the temperature in Southern Counties remained high after a get together to discuss what chance the team had of winning the trophy. Everyone appeared in high spirits and were ready for the fight!

The Division 1 teams in opposition were Eastern, Thames Valley, Isle of Wight, Kent, West Midlands, Chiltern and East Midlands. All of these were played on the Saturday and the SCPA ended a creditable third only a couple of games away from the leaders.

The Sunday saw renewed vigour and some very close fought games when only five rounds were played leaving out the Isle of Wight and Kent. The last few of our games were a real battlefield, which ended in high tension, as Chiltern were playing East Midlands and they were to have a bearing on the end result. The occasion got to several of our players and consoling arms were placed around those whose tears rolled, whether they won or lost, as the stress of playing became unbearable for some with great effort being put in to all games. As manager of the team may I say how proud I am of the way they held themselves together and the end result was one of victory after battling with great skill and often cunning. A wonderful result they all deserve. Well done to everyone - they all played their part.

The Juniors were only beaten by Chiltern (the overall Junior winners) and West Midlands. This was a wonderful performance, which placed them second in the league of Juniors and helped considerably in the overall total.

A great win for the SCPA in the 2010 Inter-Regional competition.

SCPA Mixed Doubles

There were 23 teams at Burridge on Sunday, September 12th, a couple more than last year. This was a pleasing entry considering a number of players had decided to go to the ‘Ab Fab’ competition in Kent. We were again very lucky with the weather with plenty of warm sunshine. Last year’s runners-up, Mike Tull and Jenny Peerman, again made it through to the final only to lose a very close match 13-11 to Graham Galton and Kaylee Thatcher. The same score line saw Paul and Sheila beat Helen-Marie and Ian to win the Plate.

A ‘smash the egg’ competition was run at lunchtime and amazingly 12 players managed the feat to get through to the final. This was won by Simon Greeves.

Main Winners Kaylee Thatcher & Graham Galton (Southampton City)
Runners-up Jenny Peerman & Michael Tull (Bordon)
Semi-finalist Mary Sheppard & Mike Sheppard (Limesdowne)
Semi-finalist Kath Knight & Tomasz Rypien (Arundel)

Cranleigh Open Triples

It was unseasonably cool when the competition started, but warmed up during the day and kept dry until almost the end, when we were treated to a heavy shower. During the day we watched 2 displays by the Red Arrows and an ear spilting display by the Eurofighter - all of this at no extra cost.

The format was a snake of 5 rounds. Because one team dropped out we played 9 triples and 3 doubles to avoid any byes. The results were:

  Players
1st Richard Patterson, Mark Robertshaw & Allan Paice
2nd Ray Austen & Dean Seville
3rd Jef Fox & Lesley
4th Mike Tull, Matt Slater & Michaela May

SCPA Triples and Junior Competition

These competitions took place on 18th July at Southampton City. There were 14 teams in the adult triples and, because only 6 juniors turned out, their competition was played as singles games.

The cold and windy morning saw some close games and the sunny afternoon seem to raise everyone’s spirits. Some good play was seen in the afternoon session especially as the first and second teams on the day represent the region in October at the Champion of Champions.

Main Winners Les Escargots Richard Patterson, Mark Robertshaw, Sean Prendergast
Runners-up Cobbetts 2 Dave Stubbs,  Richard Greeves, Alan Forse
Main Consolage Winners Bordon Dave Pearman, Steve Snudden, Sue Marshall
Runners-up Odds and Ends Chris Barron, Aaron Giles, Liz Farrow
Plate Winners Carnage David Plumoff, Trevor Treend, Ben Treend
Plate Consolage Winners Crondall Richard Baker, Allan Paice, Carol Paice

In the Junior competition many of the games were close fought and long games and all showed good sportsmanship. The final result showed a younger sister betting her older one by only a total of 4 points over five games.

1st Kaylee Thatcher
2nd Sam Thatcher
3rd Callum Lombard

Well done to Daniel Baker, Martin Brooks and Hannah Lombard for making the others struggle at times.

Arundel Liz Hordern Memorial Doubles

Sunday 13th June was a beautiful summer’s day in the striking surroundings of Arundel town and Castle, the perfect setting for The Liz Hordern Memorial Trophy competition. Liz was the wife of Arundel PC’s President, Mike, and a well-loved member of the club when it was based in Yapton.

24 teams competed from all over the region, many of them getting a taster of the terrain before the Regional Masters is played at Arundel next month. The club was pleased to have the opportunity to try out its new BBQ at lunchtime, with the Arundel Special Burger quickly becoming a firm favourite.

Local teams of John Barnes and Pat Parsons (Littlehampton Lovelies) and Mike Knight and Geoff Sully (Arundel Extra) reached the Main knock-out round, with Mike and Geoff fighting off fierce opposition to win through and carry off the Trophy. Worthing Open Doubles

Although there was a slightly smaller entry than usual, Worthing PC held their Open competition at Arundel on Saturday 8th May. There was a good mixture of experienced teams and those for whom it was their first competition. It was good that many 1st time competitors enjoyed the day, and look forward to boosting the numbers of other competitions in the future. As usual, there was a good raffle, a break-the-egg shooting competition, and food provided by that well-known chef, Michel Chevalier. The prizes were presented by the President of Worthing PC, 90 year-old John Townsend-Green, who also played several games during the day. A big ‘thank you’ goes to all those players from around the Region who did support us.

Arundel Grand Opening

On Sunday, 18th April, a beautiful warm and sunny day, Arundel Pétanque Club (formerly The Lamb Inn PC) held the official opening of its new terrain at Arundel Football Club. The Mayor of Arundel, Councillor Mrs Wendy Eve, performed the opening ceremony of cutting the ribbon to the accompaniment of party poppers, blowers, cheers and champagne shower. She then threw the first boule and was presented with an Arundel club cap, which should go well with the Mayoral Robes! The ceremony was also attended by Mrs Judith Buckland MBE DL, (a keen local pétanque player), Mr Bernie Miles, (SCPA President), and representatives of Arundel Football Club. Phil and Marion of Pen-y-Coed Pétanque tempted us all with their great selection of goods, and messages of congratulation were read out from the patron of Arundel Pétanque Club, the Duke of Norfolk, Mr Mike Pegg, EPA President and M Christophe le Rille of Pétanque Trévièroise, the Club in Normandy with which APC is twinned.

Teams from all over the Southern Counties, from as far away as London, the Isle of Wight and Cardiff, battled for the shiny new trophy and the selection of fine wines.

The morning format was 5 leagues of 4 plus one of 3, with league winners and next best two going into the main section of the afternoon knock-outs. The next best 8 made up the Plate competition and the last 7 went into the Spoon. First round losers in the afternoon were able to carry on playing as there were consolage events for each section.

Only 4 teams won all their morning games. The Welsh Dragons looked to be favourites, grilling Les Escargots with their flames in the first round, but falling asleep (their own words) in the semi-final. The luck of the Irish Shamrocks ran out against the Arundel Aardvarks team to leave the final to be a local derby between the Aardvarks and KGB. The new Arundel Pétanque Club triumphed in its opening competition with players Geoff, Tomasz, Mike and Kath carrying off the Main Trophy.

Arundel teams were strong at the other end of the scale too. Arundel Castles (Peter, Clare and John) winning the first fanny AND Plate Consolage, and DDT (Derek, Dave and Tim) being the friendliest/strongest team, holding all the others up, to win the wooden spoons!

The successful teams were:

Main Winners Arundel Aardvarks - Geoff Sully, Tomasz Rypien, Kath Knight, Mike Knight (Arundel)
Runners-up KGB - Andy Barron, (Farmhouse), Kim Elcome, (Adur), Graham Elcome, (Adur), Bernie Miles (Southampton City)

Cobbetts Open Doubles

There were 20 teams at Burridge on a lovely spring day for the Cobbetts Open Doubles. Dave Stubbs and Alan Forse, last year’s winners, were trying to defend their title and started well by being one of the five teams to win all of their three morning league games. Four of these teams continued this success in the first round matches in the afternoon to reach the semi-finals, with Arundel being the team to miss out.

The semi-finals brought together two Cobbetts teams with Dave and Alan just beating Mike Porter and Alison Stubbs 13-10 in a game that only lasted six high scoring ends! The other semi-final saw a comfortable win for Mark Robertshaw and Richard Patterson against the Oxshott team of Frank Charlesworth and Christine Peat. Dave and Alan became the first team to take any points off Mark and Richard in the afternoon games but this was not enough for them to retain their title as they fell to a 13-5 defeat in the final.

A case of mistaken identity saw David Plumhoff and Aaron Giles, playing in his first competition, win the Plate Consolage twice! Having beaten Richard Greeves and Alan Baker  in what they believed was the final it was pointed out that they should have played the Shire Roses so they then played Roz Silvester and Lynn May and beat them too. Meanwhile Richard and Alan had to play again in the real Plate Final against Steve Love and Sue Sandy their Cobbetts clubmates and lost again! Chris Barron and Terry Rixon won the Main Consolage ensuring that five of the six Cobbetts teams entered finished in the prizes!

Main Winners Mark Robertshaw (Limesdowne) & Richard Patterson (Adur)
Runners-up Alan Forse & Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts)
Semi-finalists Mike Porter & Alison Stubbs (Cobbetts)
Frank Charlesworth & Christine Peat (Oxshott)
Main Consolage Winners Chris Barron & Terry Rixon (Cobbetts)
Runners-up Derek Coates & Tomasz Rypien (Arundel)
Plate Winners Steve Love & Sue Sandy (Cobbetts)
Runners-up Richard Greeves & Alan Baker (Cobbetts)
Plate Consolage Winners David Plumhoff & Aaron Giles (Southampton City)
Wooden Spoon Winners Paul Hayward & Jed Stone (Limesdowne)

SCPA Winter Doubles Finals

From an initial entry of 24 teams the top 8 teams contested the finals at Burridge on Saturday, 27th March. Unfortunately the holders and top qualifiers, Harrison Ash and Ashley Odell, could not defend their title due to work commitments. After the morning leagues three time Winter Doubles winners Mike and Paul had won all three games along with Sean and Trevor. Neither of these two teams could maintain their winning ways after lunch with Chris and Dave fighting back to beat Sean and Trevor 13-12 while Dave and Richard defeated Mike and Paul. In the final, Chris and Dave again fell a long way behind but could not repeat the fight back and Dave and Richard added the Winter Doubles title to the Summer Doubles they won in October.
