SCPA Winter Mêlée, Shedfield
20 players were present at the start of the 2nd SCPA Winter Mêlée at Shedfield on Sunday,4th December. It was a cloudy day but thankfully the rain kept away and as the morning progressed a few stragglers joined in and the numbers rose to 23. Only Dave won all four matches, but the battle for the other places was very close with two other players just missing out with 3 wins +16.| 1st | Dave Stubbs (Cobbetts) | 4 wins, +24 |

Cobbetts Poppy Pétanque Open Doubles
To persuade some teams to enter the organisers were promising a warm, sunny day. Amazingly that is what we got! It was hard to believe it was November. There were 24 teams entered for the 3rd Poppy Doubles at Burridge on Remembrance Sunday, November 13th. After the morning leagues, this split nicely into Main, Plate and Wooden Spoon. Lyn's excellent food, a well-supported raffle with many donated prizes, and of course 'Smash-the egg' meant the sum of money raised was substantially more than in the previous 2 years even with prizes for 15 of the 24 teams! Mike and Wayne improved on last year's semi-final finish by winning their semi-final against Allan and Carol. In the other semi-final Roz and Dave overcame the home team of Dave and Richard. A hard fought final was won by Mike and Wayne.
Amazingly 13 people smashed the egg to qualify for the final. The log was then moved back to 9 meters and this resulted in just one hit! Danni from The Ship taking home the bottle of vodka.
A cheque for £250 will be presented to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

SCPA Doubles, Bordon
There was a lower than expected entry this on Sunday 23rd October, mainly due to the wedding of Mike and Jenny from Bordon the day before! Despite fewer teams the competition was fierce with Dave Stubbs and Richard Greeves reclaiming the title they won in 2009 with a convincing 13-0 win over David & Sam.

Summer Doubles Finals, Burridge
There was an initial entry of 18 teams for the SCPA Summer Doubles with 7½ of these teams from Cobbetts! Unfortunately several teams did not complete their matches and the large number of conceded matches, combined with matches allegedly decided by the toss of the coin, made the qualifying stages somewhat farcical. The following 8 teams qualified for the finals held at Burridge on Saturday, 8th October.
| 1 | Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) | 12 wins, +89 | |
| 2 | Chris Derrick & Dave Lucas (Ship) | 12 wins, +60 | |
| 3 | Glenn & Stuart Floyd (Cobbetts) | 10 wins, +45 | |
| 4 | Steve & Karen Lombard (Cobbetts/ Hampshire Rose) | 9 wins, +73 | |

| 5 | Danny Corp & Tony Jones (Limesdowne) | 8 wins, +7 | |
| 6 | Paula Fauvell & Ken Chapman (Cobbetts) | 8 wins, -24 | |
| 7 | Steve Love & Sue Sandy (Cobbetts) | 7 wins, -2 | |
| 8 | Roz Silvester (Hampshire Rose) & Julie Beckett (Shedfield) | 7 wins, -13 |
Finals day saw some pleasantly warm sunshine. After the morning leagues, two teams had won all 3 games, Steve & Karen and Dave & Chris from The Ship. The semi-finals saw Steve and Karen fight back to beat Dave and Richard who had been the winners for the last 3 years. Meanwhile Dave and Chris beat another Cobbetts team, Glenn and Stuart. With the two top teams from the morning through to the final a close contest was expected. Unfortunately this was not to be and Steve and Karen were comfortable winners. The final placings were:
| 1st | Steve & Karen Lombard (Cobbetts/Hampshire Rose) |
| 2nd | Chris Derrick & Dave Lucas (Ship) |
| 3rd | Dave Stubbs & Richard Greeves (Cobbetts) |
| 4th | Glenn & Stuart Floyd (Cobbetts) |

| 7th | Roz Silvester (Hampshire Rose) & Julie Beckett (Shedfield) |
| 8th | Paula Fauvell & Ken Chapman (Cobbetts) |
SCPA Mixed Doubles, Burridge
A disappointingly low, but organisationally perfect, 16 teams were expected for the SCPA Mixed Doubles on Sunday, 25th September. Unfortunately, a breakdown in communication somewhere saw 17 teams turn-up on the day! League Four was hastily rearranged to allow in the extra team. The top 8 teams after the morning leagues progressed to the Main knock-out while the Plate was changed into a 3 game ‘snake’ to accommodate the remaining 9 teams.
Having narrowly lost a hard fought game with Matt Slater and Michaela May in the morning leagues, Dave and Ali got their revenge when the teams were drawn against each other again in the quarter-finals. This was a close game but even closer was the match between Dean and Sam and Mike and Jenny. Dean and Sam eventually winning 13-12. Dave and Ali then fought back from 0-8 to beat them in the semi-finals. The long games in this half of the draw worked against Mark and Mary who had an hours wait before the final. This, coupled perhaps with some home advantage, saw Dave and Ali through to a comfortable 13-3 win to take the trophy home for the 5th time.
In the Plate competition Kath and Tomasz were just a single point ahead of Debbie and Graham, both teams having won all 3 games.

Two very warm days followed with lots of good play and some interesting results. We are looking forward to a strong squad getting to Brean Sands to defend the Championship and to better previous challenge results.

Worthing Open Triples
On a blustery 22nd May, Worthing Petanque Club held their Open Triples at their club terrain, Field Place, Worthing. They welcomed players from Arundel, Oxshott, ABC Kirdford, Cranleigh, Bordon, Adur, and of course, Worthing. Unfortunately some players failed to show on the day — and some were called in at the last moment — well done Peter and Derek (the gardener at Field Place) who suddenly found themselves playing an unexpected all-day competition. This meant there were 10 teams to fight it out — and to watch one of the gazebos cartwheel gracefully across the bowling greens — not too many divots! A snake system was used for 3 games in the morning, and knockout at 2 levels in the afternoon, with 2 teams playing each other twice for the honour of the wooden spoons. The results were as follows:

Held on Sunday 8th May, the prize money paid out was more than double the take on entry fees which was due to the generosity of Laurie Fenwick and his company Laurie Fenwick Financial Services. We also have to thank Laurie for sitting in the shed all day running the competition.
The winners of the £50 final were Dean Seville and Jacques Tirillier, and Bob Bish was the winner of the vodka prize for ‘Shoot the Egg’.

Cobbetts Open Doubles
There was a clear blue sky and warm sunshine for the full-house of 32 teams at Burridge on Sunday, 10th April. Unfortunately several other teams had to be turned away but those present were treated to superb weather, great food and excellent prizes, with all the entry money returned as trophies, wine and chocolate. After the morning leagues, the top 16 teams went through to the main knockout and the remaining 16 to the plate, with a consolage competition in both for the first round losers. One of the favoured teams, Dean Seville and Graham Elcome, were beaten by Paul and Sheila Hayward in the first round of the knock-out but did go on to win the Main Consolage. Dave and Alan, having won the competition in 2009 and been runners-up last year, were hoping to make it three finals in a row but were narrowly beaten 13-10 by Rich and Tomasz in the semi-finals. Paul and Sheila beat John and Bob in the other semi. In a hard fought final Paul and Sheila eventually triumphed 13-10 to become worthy winners. There were teams present from all corners of the region, including Poole Pirates from the west and a couple of teams from Handcross in the east and it was nice to see one of those Handcross teams, Nigel and Tony, taking home a trophy after defeating Tracey and Stuart in the Plate final. Sam Thatcher from Southampton City won the shoot-the-egg competition. The 18 teams that won prizes were as follows:

Arundel Open Triples
On 3rd April, 24 teams from all over the Southern Counties, London and Kent, entered the second Arundel Annual Triples competition. The morning format was 6 leagues of 4 with league winners and next best two going into the main section of the afternoon knock-outs. The next best 8 made up the Plate competition and the last 8 went into the Spoon. There were consolage events in each section for first round losers.
Most of the players in the Main are known names on the National circuit so the standard of play was high. Carnage lived up to its name and stormed through to win, beating another young team, Manic, in the final. The Main Consolage final was between two more strong teams, with Cobbetts beating Escargot.
In the Plate final Arundel Aarvarks got the better of KGBA. A surprise appearance in the Spoon for Oxshott saw them beating Bouledog Trio, with their natty new shirts, in this final, and two new Arundel players, Mervyn and Jo, playing with Doo were successful in the Spoon Consolage.
The friendliest team were Team Talisker from Brighton, holding up all the others, to win the wooden spoons!
The success of the day was a complete team effort from the members of Arundel PC. And thanks must go to Roger for organizing trophies and prizes, as well as being our David Bailey for the day, Peter M and his team for the food, Peter S for the paperwork (his first time), Mike H, Mike K and Kath for the raffle, Arundel members for providing the raffle prizes, Clare for keeping a careful eye on the finances, John for his car park attending and terrain management, and Tomasz and Doo for the shooting competition. The full results were:
