SCPA Masters

On a very warm weekend (27th & 28th June) the 12 teams that had qualified to play at Brean Sands for Southern Counties met at the Limesdowne Petanque Club in Catisfield, near Fareham. Six games were played on the Saturday and a further five on the Sunday. Both days were lovely, with one or two spots of rain on the second day. The leaders on the Saturday were slowly overhauled as they appeared to be out of luck, finaly winning their last game and making them 4th. The three above them in the final rankings slowly overhauled the previous deficit making a very close finish. Outrage became the final winners although good team spirit was shown by everyone who made it a very good weekend of competition. The results were:

Southampton City Open

Given the dwindling number of triples events in the Region these days and with the Masters only a week away, more than twelve teams might have been expected to turn out for Southampton City's annual tournament on 21st June.  However, a good spread of strong and experienced players from clubs across the Region - plus old friends from the Island - took part, on a warm day with clouds hiding the sun on-and-off.  Morning play was in leagues, each of which ended, remarkably, with one team having won three games, one two, one one and one none.  The three league winners plus the next best five teams went into the afternoon knockout, from which first round losers went into the Plate. The four triples who'd missed out on the knock-out played an afternoon league for the Wooden Spoon.

The second day of the annual Southampton Kite Festival was also taking place at Lord's Hill Outdoor Recreation Ground, while during the day a helicopter from Hampshire Air Ambulance and another from HM Coastguard landed and took off close by the terrain, all adding further to the atmosphere.  A good time was had by all and half the teams entering took home prizes.

The results were:

Main Winners Outrage (Matt Slater, Harrison Ash, Mike Tull)
Runners-up Lombardos (Karen, Hannah and Steve Lombard)
Semis Saints (Richard Trent, Graham Galton, David Plumhoff)
Entente Cordiale (Peter Galton, Patrice Conem, Wayne Thatcher)
Plate Winners Jorji (Jill Lovelock, John Pollinger, Robin Lovelock)
Spoon Winners Wroxall Stars (Pauline Dignan, Mike Haile, Dee Hamp, Paul Court)

The prizes were presented by the Lamb PC President Mike Hordern, in memory of his wife Liz, who was a well-loved member of the club.

SCPA Adult/Junior Doubles

On a fairly warm Monday Bank Holiday Monday (4th May), 10 juniors joined their adult partners at Cobbetts, Burridge. The top 4 pairs from the morning’s leagues entered the main competition in the afternoon, while the next 4 battled it out in the plate. This left 2 contestants, including 7 year old Declan, who was playing in his first competition, joined by his more experienced father.  These two played against last year’s winners of the competition, losing out on the best of three games.

The final was a close fought contest with both of the juniors pointing extremely well whilst the adult did the shooting. This was an entertaining game to watch and like all the games played in excellent spirit by adults and juniors alike. Many of the adults commented afterwards how much they had really enjoyed the day.

Main Winners Samantha Thatcher and Graham Galton
Rinners-up Callum and Karen Lombard
3rd Michael Priest and Dave Stubbs
4th Kaylee Thatcher and Richard Patterson
Plate Winners Emmilie Bellingham and Doo Gopel
Runners-up Martin Brooks and Mike Knight
3rd Daniel and Richard Baker
4th Jordan Johnson and Samantha Rixon
Spoon Winners Hannah and Steve Lombard

Cobbetts Open Doubles

There were 18 teams at Burridge on Sunday, April 12th for this event. Dave and Alan, last year’s plate winners, were trying to go one better this year by winning the main competition. With a 12-5 lead in the final they seemed set to achieve this but Paul and Sheila hit back in style by taking 6 points in the next end. However, Dave and Alan recovered to win the next end and the honour of being the first names on the new perpetual trophy.

7 players made it to the final of the ‘Shoot the Egg’ competition and the first round saw Dave, Tomasz, Chris Barron, Sam Thatcher and Mike Knight eliminated. Mark Duncan, the winner the previous week at Hampshire Rose, could not quite repeat the feat and eventually shared the prize with Steve Lombard.  John Limburn of Shedfield won the pointing competition.

The Winter Doubles Finals was held at Burridge on Saturday, 28th March. The top team after the 5 winter rounds was Harrison & Ashley. Mike & Mary were unlucky not to qualify but were given a reprieve when Tomasz & Ben had to withdraw. These two teams met in the first match of the morning and Mike & Mary upset the form book by winning 13-12 (having led 12-5!). Harrison & Ashley recovered well to win their next two games and win their league. Steve & Karen won all three of their games to top the other league. In the semi-finals, Steve & Karen beat Mike & Mary and Harrison & Ashley comprehensively beat the Summer Doubles Champions Richard & Dave. SCPA Quiz

The annual SCPA Quiz was held on Friday 27th February at The Limes. There was a reasonable turn-out of 8 teams but disappointingly only 5 clubs were represented (plus Tiny and Trish from Shedfield who, along with Mary Sheppard and Dave Meyer from Limes, were last year’s winners and so had the dubious honour of organising this year!) All of those who did take part had a very enjoyable evening.

The Lamb team (Mike and Kath Knight, Tim and Micheline Lawson) had built up an early 6 point lead by Round 3 but a couple of good scores saw RADS (Dave and Alison Stubbs, Richard and Sue Greeves) draw level by Round 5. It was neck and neck from there on in with The Lamb never more than 2 points ahead. The ‘running round’ on ‘ologies, ‘ectomies and phobias proved to be the decider with RADS picking up 24 points to The Lamb’s 21 to take the title back to Cobbetts for at least the 8th time! The 3 person Cobbetts team of Alan and Penny Forse and Marie Gravell also did very well to take 3rd place.

Winners RADS (Cobbetts) 97
Runners-up The Lamb 95
3rd Cobblers (Cobbetts) 86
4th Equal Top Table (Limes) 78
4th Equal Lime Pickle (Limes) 78
6th Dynamites (Cobbetts/Limes) 70
7th Oddbods (Limes/Ship) 56
8th Hampshire Lamb 48
